But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.
Like their fathers1 they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.258
They angered him3 with their high places;4 they aroused his jealousy with their idols.559
When God heard6 them, he was very angry;7 he rejected Israel8 completely.
He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,9 the tent he had set up among men.1061
He sent [the ark of] his might11 into captivity,12 his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
He gave his people over to the sword;13 he was very angry with his inheritance.1463
Fire consumed15 their young men, and their maidens had no wedding songs;1664
their priests were put to the sword,17 and their widows could not weep.
Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,18 as a man wakes from the stupor of wine.
He beat back his enemies; he put them to everlasting shame.1967
Then he rejected the tents of Joseph, he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;2068
but he chose the tribe of Judah,21 Mount Zion,22 which he loved.
He built his sanctuary23 like the heights, like the earth that he established forever.
He chose David24 his servant and took him from the sheep pens;
from tending the sheep25 he brought him to be the shepherd26 of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.
And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;27 with skillful hands he led them.
