John 1:5-15

5 ¹The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man ²sent from God, whose name was ³John.

7 He came as a ⁴witness, to bear witness about the light, ⁵that all might believe through him.

8 ⁶He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

9 ⁷The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet ⁸the world did not know him.

11 He came to ⁹his own, ^[a] and ¹⁰his own people^{[b] 11}did not receive him.

12 But to all who did receive him, ¹²who believed in his name, ¹³he gave the right ¹⁴to become ¹⁵children of God,

13 who ¹⁶were born, ¹⁷not of blood ¹⁸nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And ¹⁹the Word ²⁰became flesh and ²¹dwelt among us, ²²and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of ²³grace and ²⁴truth.

15 ( ²⁵John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ²⁶‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ’”)
