but the seventh day is a Sabbath1 to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth,2 the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested3 on the seventh day.4 Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
"Honor your father and your mother,5 so that you may live long6 in the land7 the LORD your God is giving you.
"You shall not murder.814
"You shall not commit adultery.915
"You shall not steal.1016
"You shall not give false testimony11 against your neighbor.1217
"You shall not covet13 your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet14 and saw the mountain in smoke,15 they trembled with fear.16 They stayed at a distance
and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak17 to us or we will die."1820
Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid.19 God has come to test20 you, so that the fear21 of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."22
