If any of your servants1 is found to have it, he will die;2 and the rest of us will become my lord's slaves.3"
"Very well, then," he said, "let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it4 will become my slave;5 the rest of you will be free from blame."611
Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.
Then the steward7 proceeded to search,8 beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest.9 And the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.1013
At this, they tore their clothes.11 Then they all loaded their donkeys12 and returned to the city.
Joseph was still in the house13 when Judah14 and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.1515
Joseph said to them, "What is this you have done?16 Don't you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?17"
"What can we say to my lord?18" Judah19 replied. "What can we say? How can we prove our innocence?20 God has uncovered your servants'21 guilt. We are now my lord's slaves22--we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.23"
But Joseph said, "Far be it from me to do such a thing!24 Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave.25 The rest of you, go back to your father in peace."2618
Then Judah27 went up to him and said: "Please, my lord,28 let your servant speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry29 with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
My lord asked his servants,30 'Do you have a father or a brother?'31
