Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth!8 For the LORD has spoken:9 "I reared children10 and brought them up, but they have rebelled11 against me.
The ox knows12 his master, the donkey his owner's manger,13 but Israel does not know,14 my people do not understand.15"
Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt,16 a brood of evildoers,17 children given to corruption!18 They have forsaken19 the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One20 of Israel and turned their backs21 on him.
Why should you be beaten22 anymore? Why do you persist23 in rebellion?24 Your whole head is injured, your whole heart25 afflicted.266
From the sole of your foot to the top of your head27 there is no soundness28-- only wounds and welts29 and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged30 or soothed with oil.317
Your country is desolate,32 your cities burned with fire;33 your fields are being stripped by foreigners34 right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.358
The Daughter of Zion36 is left37 like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut38 in a field of melons, like a city under siege.
Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors,39 we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.4010
Hear the word of the LORD,41 you rulers of Sodom;42 listen to the law43 of our God, you people of Gomorrah!4411
"The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals;45 I have no pleasure46 in the blood of bulls47 and lambs and goats.4812
When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you,49 this trampling of my courts?
Stop bringing meaningless offerings!50 Your incense51 is detestable52 to me. New Moons,53 Sabbaths and convocations54-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies.
Your New Moon55 festivals and your appointed feasts56 my soul hates.57 They have become a burden to me;58 I am weary59 of bearing them.
When you spread out your hands60 in prayer, I will hide61 my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen.62 Your hands63 are full of blood;6416
wash65 and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight!66 Stop doing wrong,6717
learn to do right!68 Seek justice,69 encourage the oppressed.a70 Defend the cause of the fatherless,71 plead the case of the widow.7218
"Come now, let us reason together,"73 says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;74 though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.7519
If you are willing and obedient,76 you will eat the best from the land;7720
but if you resist and rebel,78 you will be devoured by the sword."79 For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.8021
See how the faithful city has become a harlot!81 She once was full of justice; righteousness82 used to dwell in her-- but now murderers!8322
Your silver has become dross,84 your choice wine is diluted with water.
Your rulers are rebels,85 companions of thieves;86 they all love bribes87 and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them.8824
Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One89 of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will get relief from my foes and avenge90 myself on my enemies.9125
I will turn my hand against you;92 I will thoroughly purge93 away your dross94 and remove all your impurities.9526
I will restore your judges as in days of old,96 your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called97 the City of Righteousness,98 the Faithful City.99"
Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent100 ones with righteousness.10128
But rebels and sinners102 will both be broken, and those who forsake103 the LORD will perish.10429
"You will be ashamed105 because of the sacred oaks106 in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens107 that you have chosen.
You will be like an oak with fading leaves,108 like a garden without water.
The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire.109"
