But the people have not returned1 to him who struck2 them, nor have they sought3 the LORD Almighty.
So the LORD will cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed4 in a single day;515
the elders6 and prominent men7 are the head, the prophets8 who teach lies9 are the tail.
Those who guide10 this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray.1117
Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,12 nor will he pity13 the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly14 and wicked,15 every mouth speaks vileness.16 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.1718
Surely wickedness burns like a fire;18 it consumes briers and thorns,19 it sets the forest thickets ablaze,20 so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
By the wrath21 of the LORD Almighty the land will be scorched22 and the people will be fuel for the fire;23 no one will spare his brother.2420
On the right they will devour, but still be hungry;25 on the left they will eat,26 but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of his own offspringa:
Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;27 together they will turn against Judah.28 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.29
