1 Samuel 23

1 Y dieron aviso a David, diciendo: He aquí que los filisteos combaten a Keila, y roban las eras

2 Y David consultó al SEÑOR, diciendo: ¿Iré a herir a estos filisteos? Y el SEÑOR respondió a David: Ve, hiere a los filisteos, y salva a Keila

3 Mas los varones que estaban con David le dijeron: He aquí que nosotros aquí en Judá estamos con miedo; ¿cuánto más si fuéremos a Keila contra el ejército de los filisteos

4 Entonces David volvió a consultar al SEÑOR. Y el SEÑOR le respondió, y dijo: Levántate, desciende a Keila, que yo entregaré en tus manos a los filisteos

5 Y partió David con sus hombres a Keila, y peleó contra los filisteos, y trajo antecogidos sus ganados, y los hirió con grande estrago; y libró David a los de Keila

6 Y aconteció que, huyendo Abiatar hijo de Ahimelec a David a Keila, vino con el efod en su mano

7 Y fue dicho a Saúl como David había venido a Keila. Entonces dijo Saúl: Dios lo ha traído a mis manos; porque él está encerrado, habiéndose metido en una ciudad con puertas y cerraduras

8 Y convocó Saúl todo el pueblo a la batalla, para descender a Keila, y poner cerco a David y a los suyos

9 Mas entendiendo David que Saúl ideaba el mal contra él, dijo a Abiatar sacerdote: Trae el efod

10 Y dijo David: SEÑOR Dios de Israel, tu siervo ha oído que Saúl procura venir contra Keila, a destruir la ciudad por causa mía

11 ¿Me entregarán los señores de Keila en sus manos? ¿Descenderá Saúl, como tu siervo ha oído decir? SEÑOR Dios de Israel, te ruego que lo declares a tu siervo. Y el SEÑOR dijo: Sí, descenderá

12 Dijo luego David: ¿Me entregarán los señores de Keila a mí y a los varones que están conmigo en manos de Saúl? Y el SEÑOR respondió: Te entregarán

13 David entonces se levantó con sus hombres, que eran como seiscientos, y salieron de Keila, y fueron de una parte a otra. Y vino la nueva a Saúl de como David se había escapado de Keila; y dejó de salir

14 Y David se estaba en el desierto en peñas, y habitaba en un monte en el desierto de Zif; y lo buscaba Saúl todos los días, mas Dios no lo entregó en sus manos

15 Viendo, pues, David que Saúl había salido en busca de su alma, se estaba él en el bosque en el desierto de Zif

16 Entonces se levantó Jonatán hijo de Saúl, y vino a David en el bosque, y fortaleció su mano en Dios

17 Y le dijo: No temas, que no te hallará la mano de Saúl mi padre, y tú reinarás sobre Israel, y yo seré segundo después de ti; y aun mi padre así lo sabe

18 Y entre ambos hicieron pacto delante del SEÑOR; y David se quedó en el bosque, y Jonatán se volvió a su casa

19 Y subieron los de Zif a decir a Saúl en Gabaa: ¿No está David escondido en nuestra tierra en las peñas del bosque, en el collado de Haquila (oscuro) que está a la mano derecha del desierto

20 Por tanto, rey, desciende ahora presto, según todo el deseo de tu alma, y nosotros lo entregaremos en la mano del rey

21 Y Saúl dijo: Benditos seáis vosotros del SEÑOR, que habéis tenido compasión de mí

22 Id, pues, ahora, apercibid aún, considerad y ved su lugar donde tiene el pie, y quién lo haya visto allí; porque se me ha dicho que él es en gran manera prudente

23 Considerad, pues, y ved todos los escondrijos donde se oculta, y volved a mí con la certidumbre, y yo iré con vosotros; que si él estuviere en la tierra, yo le buscaré con todos los millares de Judá

24 Y ellos se levantaron, y se fueron a Zif delante de Saúl. Mas David y sus varones estaban en el desierto de Maón, en la llanura que está a la diestra del desierto

25 Y partió Saúl con sus varones a buscarlo; pero fue dado aviso a David, y descendió de allí a la peña, y se quedó en el desierto de Maón. Lo cual cuando Saúl oyó, siguió a David al desierto de Maón

26 Y Saúl iba por un lado del monte, y David con los suyos por el otro lado del monte; y David se daba prisa para ir delante de Saúl; mas Saúl y los suyos habían encerrado a David y a los suyos para tomarlos

27 Entonces vino un mensajero a Saúl, diciendo: Ven luego, porque los filisteos han entrado con ímpetu en la tierra

28 Se volvió, por tanto, Saúl de perseguir a David, y partió contra los filisteos. Por esta causa pusieron a aquel lugar por nombre Sela-hama-lecot (peña de las divisiones)

29 Entonces David subió de allí, y habitó en los parajes fuertes en En-gadi

Chapter 23

David rescues Keilah. (1-6) God warns him to escape from Keilah. (7-13) Jonathan comforts David. (14-18) He is rescued from Saul by an invasion of the Philistines. (19-29)

Verses 1-6 When princes persecute God's people, let them expect vexation on all sides. The way for any country to be quiet, is to let God's church be quiet in it: if Saul fight against David, the Philistines fight against his country. David considered himself the protector of the land. Thus did the Saviour Jesus, and left us an example. Those are unlike David, who sullenly decline to do good, if they are not rewarded for services.

Verses 7-13 Well might David complain of his enemies, that they rewarded him evil for good, and that for his love they were his adversaries. Christ was used thus basely. David applied to his great Protector for direction. No sooner was the ephod brought him than he made use of it. We have the Scriptures in our hands, let us take advice from them in doubtful cases. Say, Bring hither the Bible. David's address to God is very solemn, also very particular. God allows us to be so in our addresses to him; Lord, direct me in this matter, about which I am now at a loss. God knows not only what will be, but what would be, if it were not hindered; therefore he knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and how to render to every man according to his works.

Verses 14-18 David made no attempt against Saul; he kept God's way, waited God's time, and was content to secure himself in woods and wildernesses. Let it make us think the worse of this world, which often gives such bad treatment to its best men: let it make us long for that kingdom where goodness shall for ever be in glory, and holiness in honour. We find Jonathan comforting David. As a pious friend, he directed him to God, the Foundation of his comfort. As a self-denying friend, he takes pleasure in the prospect of David's advancement to the throne. As a constant friend, he renewed his friendship with him. Our covenant with God should be often renewed, and therein our communion with him kept up. If the converse of one friend, at one meeting, gives comfort and strengthens our hearts, what may not be expected from the continual supports and powerful love of the Saviour of sinners, the covenanted Friend of believers!

Verses 19-29 In the midst of his wickedness, Saul affected to speak the language of piety. Such expressions, without suitable effects, can only amuse or deceive those who hear, and those who use them. This mountain was an emblem of the Divine Providence coming between David and the destroyer. Let us not be dismayed at the prospect of future difficulties, but stay ourselves upon Him who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in working. Sooner than his promise shall fail, he will commission Philistines to effect our escape, at the very moment when our case appears most desperate. God requires entire dependence on him, If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established, ( Isaiah 7:9 ) .

This chapter gives an account of David's relieving Keilah, when it had like to have fallen into the hands of the Philistines, 1Sa 23:1-6; and of Saul's design to surprise him there, which David having notice of, and inquiring of the Lord, departed from thence; which when Saul heard of, he forbore to come forth, 1Sa 23:7-13; and of David's being in the wilderness of Ziph, where, in a wood there, he had an interview with Jonathan, 1Sa 23:14-18; and of the Ziphites offering to deliver him up to Saul, for which he commends them, and gives them instructions how they should behave to him in that affair, 1Sa 23:19-23; and of his seeking him in the wilderness of Maon, where David and his men were in great danger of being taken; which was prevented by the news of the Philistines invading the land coming to Saul just at the nick of time, 1Sa 23:24-29.
