1 Samuel 6

1 Y estuvo el arca del SEÑOR en la tierra de los filisteos siete meses

2 Entonces los filisteos, llamando a los sacerdotes y adivinos, preguntaron: ¿Qué haremos del arca del SEÑOR? Declaradnos cómo la hemos de volver a enviar a su lugar

3 Y ellos dijeron: Si enviáis el arca del Dios de Israel, no la enviéis vacía; mas le pagaréis la expiación de la culpa; y entonces seréis sanos, y conoceréis por qué no se apartó de vosotros su mano

4 Y ellos dijeron: ¿Y qué será la expiación de la culpa que le pagaremos? Y ellos respondieron: Conforme al número de los cardinales de los filisteos, cinco hemorroides de oro, y cinco ratones de oro, porque la misma plaga que todos tienen, tienen también vuestros príncipes

5 Haréis, pues, las formas de vuestras hemorroides, y las formas de vuestros ratones que destruyen la tierra, y daréis gloria al Dios de Israel; por ventura aliviará su mano de sobre vosotros, y de sobre vuestros dioses, y de sobre vuestra tierra

6 Mas ¿por qué endurecéis vuestro corazón, como los egipcios y Faraón endurecieron su corazón? Después que los hubo así tratado, ¿no los dejaron ir, y se fueron

7 Haced, pues, ahora un carro nuevo, y tomad luego dos vacas que críen, a las cuales no haya sido puesto yugo, y uncid las vacas al carro, y haced volver de detrás de ellas sus becerros a casa

8 Tomaréis luego el arca del SEÑOR, y la pondréis sobre el carro; y poned en una caja al lado de ella las alhajas de oro que le pagáis en expiación de la culpa; y la dejaréis que se vaya

9 Y mirad; si sube por el camino de su término a Bet-semes, él nos ha hecho este mal tan grande; y si no, seremos ciertos que su mano no nos hirió, nos ha sido accidente

10 Y aquellos varones lo hicieron así; tomando dos vacas que criaban, las uncieron al carro, y encerraron en casa sus becerros

11 Luego pusieron el arca del SEÑOR sobre el carro, y la caja con los ratones de oro y con las formas de sus hemorroides

12 Y las vacas se fueron derecho por el camino de Bet-semes, e iban por un mismo camino andando y bramando, sin apartarse ni a diestra ni a siniestra; y los cardinales de los filisteos fueron tras ellas hasta el término de Bet-semes

13 Y los de Bet-semes segaban su cosecha de trigo en el valle; y alzando sus ojos vieron el arca, y se regocijaron cuando la vieron

14 Y el carro vino al campo de Josué bet-semita, y paró allí porque allí había una gran piedra; y ellos cortaron la madera del carro, y ofrecieron las vacas en holocausto al SEÑOR

15 Y los levitas bajaron el arca del SEÑOR, y la caja que estaba junto a ella, en la cual estaban las alhajas de oro, y las pusieron sobre aquella gran piedra; y los varones de Bet-semes sacrificaron holocaustos y mataron víctimas al SEÑOR en aquel día

16 Lo cual viendo los cinco cardinales de los filisteos, se volvieron a Ecrón el mismo día

17 Estas pues son las hemorroides de oro que pagaron los filisteos al SEÑOR en expiación por su culpa: por Asdod una, por Gaza una, por Ascalón una, por Gat una, por Ecrón una

18 y ratones de oro conforme al número de todas las ciudades de los filisteos pertenecientes a los cinco cardinales, en rescate por los de las ciudades fuertes y por los moradores de los campos, hasta la gran piedra sobre la cual pusieron el arca del SEÑOR. Tienen esto en memoria en el campo de Josué, bet-semita hasta hoy

19 Entonces hirió Dios de los de Bet-semes, porque habían mirado el arca del SEÑOR; hirió en el pueblo setenta varones y cincuenta mil hombres. Y el pueblo se puso de luto, porque el SEÑOR había herido al pueblo de tan gran plaga

20 Y dijeron los de Bet-semes: ¿Quién podrá estar delante del SEÑOR el Dios santo? ¿Y a quién subirá desde nosotros

21 Y enviaron mensajeros a los de Quiriat-jearim, diciendo: Los filisteos han vuelto el arca del SEÑOR; descended, pues, y llevadla a vosotros

Chapter 6

The Philistines consult how to send back the ark. (1-9) They bring it to Bethshemesh. (10-18) The people smitten for looking into the ark. (19-21)

Verses 1-9 Seven months the Philistines were punished with the presence of the ark; so long it was a plague to them, because they would not send it home sooner. Sinners lengthen out their own miseries by refusing to part with their sins. The Israelites made no effort to recover the ark. Alas! where shall we find concern for religion prevail above all other matters? In times of public calamity we fear for ourselves, for our families, and for our country; but who cares for the ark of God? We are favoured with the gospel, but it is treated with neglect or contempt. We need not wonder if it should be taken from us; to many persons this, though the heavies of calamities, would occasion no grief. There are multitudes whom any profession would please as well as that of Christianity. But there are those who value the house, the word, and the ministry of God above their richest possessions, who dread the loss of these blessings more than death. How willing bad men are to shift off their convictions, and when they are in trouble, to believe it is a chance that happens; and that the rod has no voice which they should hear or heed!

Verses 10-18 These two kine knew their owner, their great Owner, whom Hophin and Phinehas knew not. God's providence takes notice even of brute creatures, and serves its own purposes by them. When the reapers saw the ark, they rejoiced; their joy for that was greater than the joy of harvest. The return of the ark, and the revival of holy ordinances, after days of restraint and trouble, are matters of great joy.

Verses 19-21 It is a great affront to God, for vain men to pry into, and meddle with the secret things which belong not to them, De. 29:29 ; Col. 2:18 . Man was ruined by desiring forbidden knowledge. God will not suffer his ark to be profaned. Be not deceived, God is not mocked. Those that will not fear his goodness, and reverently use the tokens of his grace, shall be made to feel his justice. The number smitten is expressed in an unusual manner in the original, and it is probable that it means 1170. They desire to be rid of the ark. Foolish men run from one extreme to the other. They should rather have asked, How may we have peace with God, and recover his favor? ( micah 6:6 micah 6:7 ) . Thus, when the word of God works with terror on sinners' consciences, they, instead of taking the blame and shame to themselves, quarrel with the word, and put that from them. Many stifle their convictions, and put salvation away from them.

INTRODUCTION TO FIRST SAMUEL 6

In this chapter we are told the Philistines advised with their priests what to do with the ark, and wherewith to send it home, 1Sa 6:1,2 whose advice was to send with it a trespass offering, golden images of emerods and mice, and to put it on a new cart, and the images in a coffer on the side of the ark, and draw it with two cows, 1Sa 6:3-8, and gave them a token whereby they might know whether they had been smitten by the God of Israel or not, 1Sa 6:9 which advice they took, and acted in all things according to it; and the lords of the Philistines accompanied the ark to the border of Bethshemesh, 1Sa 6:10-12, where they of Bethshemesh received it with joy, and offered the kine for a burnt offering to the Lord, and the Levites took care of the ark and presents in it, and the lords of the Philistines returned home, 1Sa 6:13-18, but they of Bethshemesh looking into the ark were smitten of God, upon which they sent to the men of Kirjathjearim to fetch it from them, 1Sa 6:19-21.
