He has blocked my way so I cannot pass;1 he has shrouded my paths in darkness.2
He has stripped3 me of my honor4 and removed the crown from my head.5
He tears me down6 on every side till I am gone; he uproots my hope7 like a tree.8
His anger9 burns against me; he counts me among his enemies.10
His troops advance in force;11 they build a siege ramp12 against me and encamp around my tent.13
"He has alienated my brothers14 from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.15
My kinsmen have gone away; my friends16 have forgotten me.
My guests17 and my maidservants18 count me a stranger; they look upon me as an alien.
I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him with my own mouth.
My breath is offensive to my wife; I am loathsome19 to my own brothers.
Even the little boys20 scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me.21
All my intimate friends22 detest me;23 those I love have turned against me.24
I am nothing but skin and bones;25 I have escaped with only the skin of my teeth.
"Have pity on me, my friends,26 have pity, for the hand of God has struck27 me.
Why do you pursue28 me as God does?29 Will you never get enough of my flesh?30
