Rend your heart1 and not your garments.2 Return3 to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,4 slow to anger and abounding in love,5 and he relents from sending calamity.6
Who knows? He may turn7 and have pity8 and leave behind a blessing9-- grain offerings and drink offerings10 for the LORD your God.
Blow the trumpet11 in Zion,12 declare a holy fast,13 call a sacred assembly.14
Gather the people, consecrate15 the assembly; bring together the elders,16 gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom17 leave his room and the bride her chamber.
Let the priests, who minister18 before the LORD, weep19 between the temple porch and the altar.20 Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,21 a byword22 among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?23' "
Then the LORD will be jealous24 for his land and take pity25 on his people.
The LORD will reply to them: "I am sending you grain, new wine26 and oil,27 enough to satisfy you fully;28 never again will I make you an object of scorn29 to the nations.
"I will drive the northern army30 far from you, pushing it into a parched and barren land, with its front columns going into the eastern31 sea and those in the rear into the western sea. And its stench32 will go up; its smell will rise." Surely he has done great things.
Be not afraid,33 O land; be glad and rejoice.34 Surely the LORD has done great things.35
Be not afraid, O wild animals, for the open pastures are becoming green.36 The trees are bearing their fruit; the fig tree37 and the vine38 yield their riches.39
Be glad, O people of Zion, rejoice40 in the LORD your God, for he has given you the autumn rains in righteousness.41 He sends you abundant showers,42 both autumn43 and spring rains,44 as before.
