John 1:13-23 (New International Version)

13 children born not of natural descent,a nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.1 14 The Word became flesh2 and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,3 the glory of the One and Only,b who came from the Father, full of grace4 and truth.5 15 John testifies6 concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "7 16 From the fullness8 of his grace9 we have all received one blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses;10 grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.11 18 No one has ever seen God,12 but God the One and Onlycd13, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Christ

19 Now this was John's14 testimony when the Jews15 of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ.e "16 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?"17 He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?"18 He answered, "No." 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert,19 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "f20
