Yet to all who received him, to those who believed1 in his name,2 he gave the right to become children of God3--
children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.4
The Word became flesh5 and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,6 the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace7 and truth.8
John testifies9 concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "10
From the fullness11 of his grace12 we have all received one blessing after another.
For the law was given through Moses;13 grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.14
No one has ever seen God,15 but God the One and Only16, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
Now this was John's17 testimony when the Jews18 of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. "19
They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?"20 He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?"21 He answered, "No."
Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?"
