the five1 rulers of the Philistines,2 all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites3 living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon4 to Leboa Hamath.54
They were left to test6 the Israelites to see whether they would obey the LORD's commands, which he had given their forefathers through Moses.
The Israelites lived7 among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,8 Hivites and Jebusites.96
They took their daughters10 in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.1112
The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD; they forgot the LORD13 their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.148
The anger of the LORD burned against Israel so that he sold15 them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim16 king of Aram Naharaim,b17 to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years.
But when they cried out18 to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer,19 Othniel20 son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them.
The Spirit of the LORD came upon him,21 so that he became Israel's judgec and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim22 king of Aram23 into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.
So the land had peace24 for forty years,25 until Othniel son of Kenaz26 died.
Once again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD,27 and because they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab28 power over Israel.
Getting the Ammonites29 and Amalekites30 to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.d31
