You lust and do not have; so you 1commitmurder. You are envious and cannot*obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not havebecause you do not ask.

You ask and 2do not receive, because you ask with wrongmotives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.

You 3adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with 4the world is 5hostility toward God? 6Thereforewhoever*wishes to be a friend of the worldmakes himself an enemy of God.

Or do you think that the Scripture7speaks to nopurpose: "He jealouslydesires8the Spiritwhich He has made to dwell in us"?

But 9He gives a greatergrace. Therefore it says, "10GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVESGRACE TO THE HUMBLE."

11Submittherefore to God. 12Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

13Drawnear to God and He will drawnear to you. 14Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and 15purify your hearts, you 16double-minded.

17Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.

18Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

19Do not speakagainstoneanother, 20brethren. He who speaksagainst a brotheror21judges his brother, speaksagainst22the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not 23a doer of the law but a judge of it.

There is only one24Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is 25able to save and to destroy; but 26who are you who judge your neighbor?
