But it is not as though1the word of God has failed. 2For they are not allIsraelwho are descended from Israel;
7nor are they allchildren3because they are Abraham'sadescendants, but: "b4THROUGHISAAC YOUR cDESCENDANTS WILL BE NAMED."
That is, it is not the children of the fleshwho are 5children of God, but the 6children of the promise are regarded as ddescendants.
For this is the word of promise: "7AT THISTIME I WILL COME, AND SARAH SHALL HAVE A SON."
108And not only this, but there was 9Rebekahalso, when she had conceived twins by oneman, our fatherIsaac;
for though the twins were not yetborn and had not doneanythinggoodorbad, so that 10God'spurposeaccording to His choice would estand, not fbecause of works but gbecause of Him who calls,
it was said to her, "11THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER."
13Just as it is written, "12JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED."
1413What shall we saythen? 14There is noinjustice with God, is there? 15May it never be!
For He says to Moses, "16I WILL HAVEMERCY ON WHOM I HAVEMERCY, AND I WILL HAVECOMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVECOMPASSION."
16Sothen it does not depend on the man who willsor the man who 17runs, but on 18God who hasmercy.
