Genesis 30

HNV 1 When Rachel saw that she bore Ya`akov no children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Ya`akov, "Give me children, or else I will die." NIV 1 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I'll die!" HNV 2 Ya`akov's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, "Am I in God's place, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?" NIV 2 Jacob became angry with her and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?" HNV 3 She said, "Behold, my maid Bilhah. Go in to her, that she may bear on my knees, and I also may obtain children by her." NIV 3 Then she said, "Here is Bilhah, my maidservant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and that through her I too can build a family." HNV 4 She gave him Bilhah her handmaid as wife, and Ya`akov went in to her. NIV 4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her, HNV 5 Bilhah conceived, and bore Ya`akov a son. NIV 5 and she became pregnant and bore him a son. HNV 6 Rachel said, "God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son." Therefore called she his name Dan. NIV 6 Then Rachel said, "God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son." Because of this she named him Dan. HNV 7 Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, conceived again, and bore Ya`akov a second son. NIV 7 Rachel's servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. HNV 8 Rachel said, "With mighty wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed." She named him Naftali. NIV 8 Then Rachel said, "I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won." So she named him Naphtali. HNV 9 When Le'ah saw that she had finished bearing, she took Zilpah, her handmaid, and gave her to Ya`akov as a wife. NIV 9 When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her maidservant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. HNV 10 Zilpah, Le'ah's handmaid, bore Ya`akov a son. NIV 10 Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. HNV 11 Le'ah said, "How fortunate!" She named him Gad. NIV 11 Then Leah said, "What good fortune!" So she named him Gad. HNV 12 Zilpah, Le'ah's handmaid, bore Ya`akov a second son. NIV 12 Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. HNV 13 Le'ah said, "Happy am I, for the daughters will call me happy." She named him Asher. NIV 13 Then Leah said, "How happy I am! The women will call me happy." So she named him Asher. HNV 14 Re'uven went in the days of wheat harvest, and found dudaim in the field, and brought them to his mother, Le'ah. Then Rachel said to Le'ah, "Please give me some of your son's dudaim." NIV 14 During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes." HNV 15 She said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son's dudaim, also?" Rachel said, "Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son's dudaim." NIV 15 But she said to her, "Wasn't it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son's mandrakes too?" "Very well," Rachel said, "he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes." HNV 16 Ya`akov came from the field in the evening, and Le'ah went out to meet him, and said, "You must come in to me; for I have surely hired you with my son's dudaim." He lay with her that night. NIV 16 So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. "You must sleep with me," she said. "I have hired you with my son's mandrakes." So he slept with her that night. HNV 17 God listened to Le'ah, and she conceived, and bore Ya`akov a fifth son. NIV 17 God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. HNV 18 Le'ah said, "God has given me my hire, because I gave my handmaid to my husband." She named him Yissakhar. NIV 18 Then Leah said, "God has rewarded me for giving my maidservant to my husband." So she named him Issachar. HNV 19 Le'ah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Ya`akov. NIV 19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. HNV 20 Le'ah said, "God has endowed me with a good dowry. Now my husband will live with me, because I have borne him six sons." She named him Zevulun. NIV 20 Then Leah said, "God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons." So she named him Zebulun. HNV 21 Afterwards, she bore a daughter, and named her Dinah. NIV 21 Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah. HNV 22 God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and opened her womb. NIV 22 Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb. HNV 23 She conceived, bore a son, and said, "God has taken away my reproach. NIV 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, "God has taken away my disgrace." HNV 24 She named him Yosef, saying, "May the LORD add another son to me." NIV 24 She named him Joseph, and said, "May the LORD add to me another son." HNV 25 It happened, when Rachel had borne Yosef, that Ya`akov said to Lavan, "Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country. NIV 25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, "Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland. HNV 26 Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go: for you know my service with which I have served you." NIV 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I've done for you." HNV 27 Lavan said to him, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, stay here, for I have divined that the LORD has blessed me for your sake." NIV 27 But Laban said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you." HNV 28 He said, "Appoint me your wages, and I will give it." NIV 28 He added, "Name your wages, and I will pay them." HNV 29 He said to him, "You know how I have served you, and how your cattle have fared with me. NIV 29 Jacob said to him, "You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care. HNV 30 For it was little which you had before I came, and it has increased to a multitude. The LORD has blessed you wherever I turned. Now when will I provide for my own house also?" NIV 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the LORD has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?" HNV 31 He said, "What shall I give you?" Ya`akov said, "You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed your flock and keep it. NIV 31 "What shall I give you?" he asked. "Don't give me anything," Jacob replied. "But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: HNV 32 I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there every speckled and spotted one, and every black one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats. This will be my hire. NIV 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages. HNV 33 So my righteousness will answer for me hereafter, when you come concerning my hire that is before you. Everyone that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and black among the sheep, that might be with me, will be counted stolen." NIV 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen." HNV 34 Lavan said, "Behold, I desire it to be according to your word." NIV 34 "Agreed," said Laban. "Let it be as you have said." HNV 35 That day, he removed the male goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons. NIV 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons. HNV 36 He set three days' journey between himself and Ya`akov, and Ya`akov fed the rest of Lavan's flocks. NIV 36 Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban's flocks. HNV 37 Ya`akov took to himself rods of fresh poplar, almond, plane tree, peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods. NIV 37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. HNV 38 He set the rods which he had peeled opposite the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs where the flocks came to drink. They conceived when they came to drink. NIV 38 Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink, HNV 39 The flocks conceived before the rods, and the flocks brought forth streaked, speckled, and spotted. NIV 39 they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. HNV 40 Ya`akov separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the black in the flock of Lavan: and he put his own droves apart, and didn't put them into Lavan's flock. NIV 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban's animals. HNV 41 It happened, whenever the stronger of the flock conceived, that Ya`akov laid the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods; NIV 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches, HNV 42 but when the flock were feeble, he didn't put them in. So the feebler were Lavan's, and the stronger Ya`akov's. NIV 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob. HNV 43 The man increased exceedingly, and had large flocks, maid-servants and men-servants, and camels and donkeys. NIV 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.
