Matthew 8

RHE 1 And when he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him: NIV 1 When he came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. RHE 2 And behold a leper came and adored him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. NIV 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." RHE 3 And Jesus stretching forth his hand, touched him, saying: I will, be thou made clean. And forthwith his leprosy was cleansed. NIV 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. RHE 4 And Jesus saith to him: See thou tell no man: but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. NIV 4 Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." RHE 5 And when he had entered into Capharnaum, there came to him a centurion, beseeching him, NIV 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. RHE 6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, and is grievously tormented. NIV 6 "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." RHE 7 And Jesus saith to him: I will come and heal him. NIV 7 Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him." RHE 8 And the centurion, making answer, said: Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed. NIV 8 The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. RHE 9 For I also am a man subject to authority, having under me soldiers; and I say to this, Go, and he goeth, and to another Come, and he cometh, and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. NIV 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." RHE 10 And Jesus hearing this, marvelled; and said to them that followed him. Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith in Israel. NIV 10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. RHE 11 And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven: NIV 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. RHE 12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. NIV 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." RHE 13 And Jesus said to the centurion: Go, and as thou hast believed, so be it done to thee. And the servant was healed at the same hour. NIV 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour. RHE 14 And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother lying, and sick of a fever; NIV 14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. RHE 15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she arose and ministered to them. NIV 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. RHE 16 And when evening was come, they brought to him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word: and all that were sick he healed: NIV 16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. RHE 17 That it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet Isaias, saying: He took our infirmities, and bore our diseases. NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases." RHE 18 And Jesus seeing great multitudes about him, gave orders to pass over the water. NIV 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. RHE 19 And a certain scribe came and said to him: Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou shalt go. RHE 20 And Jesus saith to him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. NIV 20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." RHE 21 And another of his disciples said to him: Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. NIV 21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." RHE 22 But Jesus said to him: Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead. NIV 22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." RHE 23 And when he entered into the boat, his disciples followed him: NIV 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. RHE 24 And behold a great tempest arose in the sea, so that the boat was covered with waves, but he was asleep. NIV 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. RHE 25 And they came to him, and awaked him, saying: Lord, save us, we perish. NIV 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" RHE 26 And Jesus saith to them: Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then rising up, he commanded the winds, and the sea, and there came a great calm. NIV 26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. RHE 27 But the men wondered, saying: What manner of man is this, for the winds and the sea obey him? NIV 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" RHE 28 And when he was come on the other side of the water, into the country of the Gerasens, there met him two that were possessed with devils, coming out of the sepulchres, exceeding fierce, so that none could pass by that way. NIV 28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. RHE 29 And behold they cried out, saying: What have we to do with thee, Jesus Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? NIV 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?" RHE 30 And there was, not far from them, a herd of many swine feeding. NIV 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. RHE 31 And the devils besought him, saying: If thou cast us out hence, send us into the herd of swine. NIV 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs." RHE 32 And he said to them: Go. But they going out went into the swine, and behold the whole herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea: and they perished in the waters. NIV 32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. RHE 33 And they that kept them fled: and coming into the city, told every thing, and concerning them that had been possessed by the devils. NIV 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. RHE 34 And behold the whole city went out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart from their coast. NIV 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
