So he ended their days in futility1 and their years in terror.
Whenever God slew them, they would seek2 him; they eagerly turned to him again.
They remembered that God was their Rock,3 that God Most High was their Redeemer.436
But then they would flatter him with their mouths,5 lying to him with their tongues;
their hearts were not loyal6 to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
Yet he was merciful;7 he forgave8 their iniquities9 and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger10 and did not stir up his full wrath.
He remembered that they were but flesh,11 a passing breeze12 that does not return.
How often they rebelled13 against him in the desert14 and grieved him15 in the wasteland!
Again and again they put God to the test;16 they vexed the Holy One of Israel.1742
They did not remember18 his power-- the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,1943
the day he displayed his miraculous signs20 in Egypt, his wonders21 in the region of Zoan.
