He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed1 their enemies.254
Thus he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand3 had taken.
He drove out nations4 before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;5 he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.
Like their fathers6 they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.758
They angered him8 with their high places;9 they aroused his jealousy with their idols.1059
When God heard11 them, he was very angry;12 he rejected Israel13 completely.
He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,14 the tent he had set up among men.1561
