2 Crónicas 21

1 Y durmió Josafat con sus padres, y lo sepultaron con sus padres en la ciudad de David. Y reinó en su lugar Joram su hijo.

2 Este tuvo hermanos, hijos de Josafat, a Azarías, Jehiel, Zacarías, Azarías, Micael, y Sefatías. Todos estos fueron hijos de Josafat rey de Israel.

3 Y su padre les había dado muchos dones de oro y de plata, y cosas preciosas, y ciudades fuertes en Judá; mas había dado el reino a Joram, porque él era el primogénito.

4 Y se levantó Joram contra el reino de su padre; y se hizo fuerte, y mató a cuchillo a todos sus hermanos, y asimismo a algunos de los príncipes de Israel.

5 Cuando comenzó a reinar era de treinta y dos años, y reinó ocho años en Jerusalén.

6 Y anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel, como hizo la casa de Acab; porque tenía por mujer a la hija de Acab, e hizo lo malo en ojos del SEÑOR.

7 Mas el SEÑOR no quiso destruir la casa de David, por la alianza que con David había hecho, y porque le había dicho que le daría lámpara a él y a sus hijos perpetuamente.

8 En los días de éste se rebeló Edom, para no estar bajo el poder de Judá, y pusieron rey sobre sí.

9 Entonces pasó Joram con sus príncipes, y consigo todos sus carros; y se levantó de noche, e hirió a Edom que le habían cercado, y a todos los príncipes de sus carros.

10 Con todo eso Edom quedó rebelado, sin estar bajo la mano de Judá hasta hoy. También se rebeló en el mismo tiempo Libna para no estar bajo su mano; por cuanto él había dejado al SEÑOR el Dios de sus padres.

11 Demás de esto hizo altos en los montes de Judá, e hizo que los moradores de Jerusalén fornicasen, y a ello impelió a Judá.

12 Y le llegaron letras del profeta Elías, que decían así: El SEÑOR, el Dios de David tu padre, ha dicho así: Por cuanto no has andado en los caminos de Josafat tu padre, ni en los caminos de Asa, rey de Judá,

13 antes has andado en el camino de los reyes de Israel, y has hecho que fornicase Judá, y los moradores de Jerusalén, como fornicó la casa de Acab; y además has muerto a tus hermanos, a la casa de tu padre, los cuales eran mejores que tú,

14 he aquí el SEÑOR herirá tu pueblo de una grande plaga, y a tus hijos y a tus mujeres, y a toda tu hacienda;

15 y a ti con muchas enfermedades, con enfermedad de tus entrañas, hasta que las entrañas se te salgan a causa de la enfermedad de cada día.

16 Entonces despertó el SEÑOR contra Joram el espíritu de los filisteos, y de los árabes que estaban junto a los etíopes;

17 y subieron contra Judá, e invadieron la tierra, y saquearon toda la hacienda que hallaron en la casa del rey, y a sus hijos, y a sus mujeres; que no le quedó hijo, sino Joacaz el menor de sus hijos.

18 Después de todo esto el SEÑOR lo hirió en las entrañas de una enfermedad incurable.

19 Y aconteció que, pasando un día tras otro, al fin, al cabo de dos años, las entrañas se le salieron con la enfermedad, muriendo así de enfermedad muy penosa. Y no le hizo quema su pueblo, como las había hecho a sus padres.

20 Cuando comenzó a reinar era de treinta y dos años , y reinó en Jerusalén ocho años; y se fue sin ser deseado. Y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David, mas no en los sepulcros de los reyes.

Chapter 21

The wicked reign of Jehoram. (1-11) Jehoram's miserable end. (12-20)

Verses 1-11 Jehoram hated his brethren, and slew them, for the same reason that Cain hated Abel, and slew him, because their piety condemned his impiety. In the mystery of Providence such men sometimes prosper for a time; but the Lord has righteous purposes in permitting such events, part of which may now be made out, and the rest will be seen hereafter.

Verses 12-20 A warning from God was sent to Jehoram. The Spirit of prophecy might direct Elijah to prepare this writing in the foresight of Jehoram's crimes. He is plainly told that his sin should certainly ruin him. But no marvel that sinners are not frightened from sin, and to repentance, by the threatenings of misery in another world, when the certainty of misery in this world, the sinking of their estates, and the ruin of their health, will not restrain them from vicious courses. See Jehoram here stripped of all his comforts. Thus God plainly showed that the controversy was with him, and his house. He had slain all his brethren to strengthen himself; now, all his sons are slain but one. David's house must not be wholly destroyed, like those of Israel's kings, because a blessing was in it; that of the Messiah. Good men may be afflicted with diseases; but to them they are fatherly chastisements, and by the support of Divine consolations the soul may dwell at ease, even when the body lies in pain. To be sick and poor, sick and solitary, but especially to be sick and in sin, sick and under the curse of God, sick and without grace to bear it, is a most deplorable case. Wickedness and profaneness make men despicable, even in the eyes of those who have but little religion.
