Marcos 8

1 En aquellos días, como otra vez hubo gran multitud, y no tenían qué comer, Jesús llamó a sus discípulos, y les dijo:

2 Tengo misericordia de la multitud, porque ya hace tres días que están conmigo; y no tienen qué comer.

3 Si los envío en ayunas a sus casas, desmayarán en el camino; porque algunos de ellos han venido de lejos.

4 Sus discípulos le respondieron: ¿De dónde podrá alguien saciar a éstos de pan aquí en el desierto?

5 Y les preguntó: ¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Y ellos dijeron: Siete.

6 Entonces mandó a la multitud que se recostase en tierra; y tomando los siete panes, habiendo dado gracias, partió, y dio a sus discípulos que pusiesen delante; y los pusieron delante a la multitud.

7 Tenían también unos pocos pececillos; y los bendijo, y mandó que también los pusiesen delante.

8 Y comieron, y se saciaron; y levantaron de los pedazos que habían sobrado, siete canastas.

9 Y eran los que comieron, como cuatro mil; y los despidió.

10 Luego entrando en el barco con sus discípulos, vino a la región de Dalmanuta.

11 Y vinieron los fariseos, y comenzaron a altercar con él, demandándole señal del cielo, tentándole.

12 Y gimiendo de su espíritu, dice: ¿Por qué pide señal esta generación? De cierto os digo que no se dará señal a esta generación.

13 Y dejándolos, volvió a entrar en el barco, y se fue a la otra ribera.

14 Y se habían olvidado de tomar pan, y no tenían sino un pan consigo en el barco.

15 Y les mandó, diciendo: Mirad, guardaos de la levadura de los fariseos, y de la levadura de Herodes.

16 Y altercaban los unos con los otros diciendo: Pan no tenemos.

17 Y como Jesús lo entendió, les dice: ¿Qué altercáis, porque no tenéis pan? ¿No consideráis ni entendéis? ¿Aún tenéis ciego vuestro corazón?

18 ¿Teniendo ojos no veis, y teniendo oídos no oís? ¿Y no os acordáis?

19 Cuando partí los cinco panes entre cinco mil, ¿cuántas canastas llenas de los pedazos alzasteis? Y ellos dijeron: Doce.

20 Y cuando los siete panes entre cuatro mil, ¿cuántas canastas llenas de los pedazos alzasteis? Y ellos dijeron: Siete.

21 Y les dijo: ¿Cómo aún no entendéis?

22 Y vino a Betsaida; y le traen un ciego, y le ruegan que le tocase.

23 Entonces, tomando la mano del ciego, le sacó fuera de la aldea; y escupiendo en sus ojos, y poniéndole las manos encima, le preguntó si veía algo.

24 Y él mirando, dijo: Veo los hombres, pues veo que andan como árboles.

25 Luego le puso otra vez las manos sobre sus ojos, y le hizo que mirase; y fue sano, y vio de lejos y claramente a todos.

26 Y le envió a su casa, diciendo: No entres en la aldea, ni lo digas a nadie en la aldea.

27 Salió Jesús y sus discípulos por las aldeas de Cesarea de Filipo. Y en el camino preguntó a sus discípulos, diciéndoles: ¿Quién dicen los hombres que soy yo?

28 Ellos respondieron: Juan Bautista; y otros, Elías; y otros: Alguno de los profetas.

29 Entonces él les dice: Y vosotros, ¿quién decís que soy yo? Y respondiendo Pedro, le dice: ¡Tú eres el Cristo!

30 Y les mandó que no hablasen esto de él a ninguno.

31 Y comenzó a enseñarles, que convenía que el Hijo del hombre padeciese mucho, y ser reprobado de los ancianos, y de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los escribas; y ser muerto, y resucitar después de tres días.

32 Y claramente decía esta palabra. Entonces Pedro le tomó, y le comenzó a reprender.

33 Y él, volviéndose y mirando a sus discípulos, riñó a Pedro, diciendo: Apártate de mí, Satanás; porque no sabes las cosas que son de Dios, sino las que son de los hombres.

34 Y llamando a la multitud con sus discípulos, les dijo: Cualquiera que quisiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, y tome su madero, y sígame.

35 Porque el que quisiere salvar su vida, la perderá; y el que perdiere su vida por causa de mí y del Evangelio, éste la salvará.

36 Porque ¿qué aprovechará al hombre, si ganare todo el mundo, y pierde su alma?

37 ¿O qué recompensa dará el hombre por su alma?

38 Porque el que se avergonzare de mí y de mis palabras en esta generación adulterina y pecadora, el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará también de él, cuando vendrá en la gloria de su Padre con los santos ángeles.

Marcos 8 Commentary

Chapter 8

Four thousand fed by a miracle. (1-10) Christ cautions against the Pharisees and Herodians. (11-21) A blind man healed. (22-26) Peter's testimony to Christ. (27-33) Christ must be followed. (34-38)

Verses 1-10 Our Lord Jesus encouraged the meanest to come to him for life and grace. Christ knows and considers our frames. The bounty of Christ is always ready; to show that, he repeated this miracle. His favours are renewed, as our wants and necessities are. And those need not fear want, who have Christ to live upon by faith, and do so with thanksgiving.

Verses 11-21 Obstinate unbelief will have something to say, though ever so unreasonable. Christ refused to answer their demand. If they will not be convinced, they shall not. Alas! what cause we have to lament for those around us, who destroy themselves and others by their perverse and obstinate unbelief, and enmity to the gospel! When we forget the works of God, and distrust him, we should chide ourselves severely, as Christ here reproves his disciples. How is it that we so often mistake his meaning, disregard his warnings, and distrust his providence?

Verses 22-26 Here is a blind man brought to Christ by his friends. Therein appeared the faith of those that brought him. If those who are spiritually blind, do not pray for themselves, yet their friends and relations should pray for them, that Christ would be pleased to touch them. The cure was wrought gradually, which was not usual in our Lord's miracles. Christ showed in what method those commonly are healed by his grace, who by nature are spiritually blind. At first, their knowledge is confused; but, like the light of the morning, it shines more and more to the perfect day, and then they see all things clearly. Slighting Christ's favours is forfeiting them; and he will make those who do so know the worth of privileges by the want of them.

Verses 27-33 These things are written, that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. These miracles of our Lord assure us that he was not conquered, but a Conqueror. Now the disciples are convinced that Jesus is the Christ; they may bear to hear of his sufferings, of which Christ here begins to give them notice. He sees that amiss in what we say and do, of which we ourselves are not aware, and knows what manner of spirit we are of, when we ourselves do not. The wisdom of man is folly, when it pretends to limit the Divine counsels. Peter did not rightly understand the nature of Christ's kingdom.

Verses 34-38 Frequent notice is taken of the great flocking there was to Christ for help in various cases. All are concerned to know this, if they expect him to heal their souls. They must not indulge the ease of the body. As the happiness of heaven with Christ, is enough to make up for the loss of life itself for him, so the gain of all the world in sin, will not make up for the ruin of the soul by sin. And there is a day coming, when the cause of Christ will appear as glorious, as some now think it mean and contemptible. May we think of that season, and view every earthly object as we shall do at that great day.
