I watched as the Lamb1 opened the first of the seven seals.2 Then I heard one of the four living creatures3 say in a voice like thunder,4 "Come!"
I looked, and there before me was a white horse!5 Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,6 and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.73
When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature8 say, "Come!"
Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.9 Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth10 and to make people slay each other. To him was given a large sword.
When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature11 say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse!12 Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.
Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,13 saying, "Two poundsa of wheat for a day's wages,b and six poundsc of barley for a day's wages,d14 and do not damage15 the oil and the wine!"
When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature16 say, "Come!"
I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!17 Its rider was named Death, and Hades18 was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.199
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under20 the altar21 the souls of those who had been slain22 because of the word of God23 and the testimony they had maintained.
They called out in a loud voice, "How long,24 Sovereign Lord,25 holy and true,26 until you judge the inhabitants of the earth27 and avenge our blood?"2811
Then each of them was given a white robe,29 and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants and brothers and sisters were killed just as they had been.3012
I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.31 The sun turned black32 like sackcloth33 made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red,
and the stars in the sky fell to earth,34 as figs drop from a fig tree35 when shaken by a strong wind.
The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up,36 and every mountain and island was removed from its place.3715
Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free,38 hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.3916
They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us40 and hide use from the face of him who sits on the throne41 and from the wrath of the Lamb!
For the great day42 of theirf wrath has come, and who can withstand it?"43
