Mark 6:26

And the king was exceeding sorry

yet for his oath's sake, [and] for their sakes which sat with him;
as Matthew adds, "at meat", ( Matthew 14:9 ) ; for it seems as if supper was not over, when all this was transacting.

He would not reject her;
deny her her request, or send her away without granting it which could not be without grieving her, and treating her with contempt, and defrauding her of the promise; all which ideas are expressed by some versions.

25 E tornando logo com pressa � presença do rei, pediu, dizendo: Quero que imediatamente me dês num prato a cabeça de João, o Batista.
26 Ora, entristeceu-se muito o rei; todavia, por causa dos seus juramentos e por causa dos que estavam � mesa, não lha quis negar.
27 O rei, pois, enviou logo um soldado da sua guarda com ordem de trazer a cabeça de João. Então ele foi e o degolou no cárcere,
28 e trouxe a cabeça num prato e a deu � jovem, e a jovem a deu � sua mãe.
