With so many biblical scholars disagreeing on interpretation, is it any wonder many find Song of Solomon confusing? Some say it’s a drama or musical, and elaborate that there are two or three main characters. It’s often called Song of Songs, and even the Canticle of Canticles. Most agree that it shows a beautiful picture of God’s design for love and the marriage relationship. Others say the book is an allegory of God and His relationship with the church. Still others claim that theory is nonsense.
So, this non-theologian dove into its commentary, read sermons online, and studied old textbooks to see what I could find out about this poetic book. The journey took me in lots of different directions. But, regardless of your views, consider the following interesting observations pertaining to this Old Testament book.

Traditions reign during Christmas. Every family has a way of doing all things Christmas-sy. Whether you have a real or fake tree, colored or white lights, serve ham or turkey, are visited by Santa or an elf, you all have traditions.
These help make the holiday celebrations magical. They remind us of the extraordinary event that happened over two thousand years ago when God became flesh in a fragile newborn. They fill our hearts with the joy that comes from giving, and they prompt us to spend time with our loved ones.
As a writer, reader, mom, and former teacher and children’s ministry director, one of my most cherished traditions is to read Christmas stories to the young ones in my life. These have touched my family and the children I’ve served. They’re a mix of old, new, popular, little-known, folklore, and poem, and all would make great additions to your December.

“Sunday’s always coming.”
I said those words many times when I was a children’s ministry director. Our staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming Sunday services and weekly activities. The second they finished, we’d have to start all over to prepare for the next ones. Sundays never cease. Anyone who helps pull off a Sunday or midweek church activities knows this full well. There isn’t an “easy” season when it comes to ministry. There’s only full speed ahead, and super speed when the kids return to school, during the holiday season, and Easter.
I found that being on a church staff doesn’t make you immune to burnout. I also witnessed many people in our church body fall prey to the exhaustion from the weekly grind. This experience has given me an observant eye to the pitfalls of Sunday fatigue and how to fight it, or avoid it altogether.
