Watching Our Children Walking in Truth

The joy on my youngest daughter’s face as she sat in the water, professing her faith and waiting to be immersed in the glorious moment of proclaiming Christ her Savior, was a radiant, supernatural joy. A joy she has daily. I know, because I have honored her questions and heard her prayers over the years. “Joy has always accompanied Jesus,” Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary explains, “The joy John expresses is closely related to the love he has for his readers.”

Her desire to be more like me is so clearly the work of the Holy Spirit in both of our lives. She has seen her momma on the best and worst days. We’ve yelled at each other and apologized to each other. Wept in sadness and loss and rejoiced and belly-laughed with each other. We have spent a lot of time serving others together. She has helped me set up coffee for women’s Bible study before leaving for school and jumped around praising God on stage with the kids worship team we led together. She has sat quietly in her old sister’s Bible study group, sometimes moving to sit right next to me as we read and talk together. She has helped out with the little kids at church, and become a part of a small group of girls her age on Sundays.

When I look back at all the seeds God has planted and watered over the years, my heart smiles in the careful way He grows each of His precious children. The worship concerts where we’ve stood arm and arm together, praising God …every effort matters to God. But when we truly know Jesus, those things happen along the way as we follow Him, ourselves. I love Jesus. Love to serve God and talk about Christ. My old worn-out Bible is tear-stained and scribbled all over …it’s life to me. His Word is life. And I’m overjoyed that my daughters noticed, and decided to seek Life and Truth through Christ, as well. Truly, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in truth” (3 John 1:4). There is no greater joy than Jesus. No greater joy than knowing all we do is to honor Him. No greater joy than knowing we are never alone. That we are always forgiven, and never loved less. Glory to God in the highest.
