Why We Daily Need God’s Unfailing Love and Faithfulness

Faithfulness is a whimsical idea in our modern-day society – but not for those whose hearts beat by the power of God. A wise leader in my life often points out the value of expectations. If our expectations are not met, or if they are set inappropriately, we often find ourselves disappointed. When we set our expectations of God, no such limits exist. People have to manage expectations, both of ourselves and of others. There is no way we could ever expect something God isn’t capable of. In fact, He will undoubtedly exceed our expectations. Whether His plans run alongside ours is another story.

The Savior of the world put on human skin and dirty sandals to walk out God’s unfailing love for us. He promised to be with us always, to the end of every age. In other words, forever and unto eternity, we are protected under the wing of God’s unfailing love through His son Christ Jesus, our unfailing friend. The psalm sings,

The very source of life created us for His glory. There is no such thing as coincidence within the unfailing love of the Lord. And all ends of the earth lie under His sovereign hand. Yes, it’s crazy out there, but it’s a fallen world, and humanity is cursed by sin. The only freedom we find from the madness – our peace in this pocket of existence – comes from the unfailing love of God. The psalmist wrote, “For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see” (Psalm 36:9).

The apostle John wrote, “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you wont have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life’” (John 8:12). John knew Jesus. He was His best friend. John walked alongside Jesus long enough to understand the light He reflected onto everything He did and spoke about. The light is Jesus. And when we allow Him to shine into the days of our lives and His light into our thoughts, the unfailing love of the Lord begins to steer us in every way.

The prophet Jeremiah wrote of God’s people turning away from God. They spent years in exile after a yoyo-ing back and forth from God. But they never fell out of God’s unfailing love. We don’t have the power to trump God’s love.

The most incredible note about God’s faithfulness is His forgiveness. He doesn’t wait until we are broken and leaking to turn His head towards us. He is always for us. He always loves us. Long before we know Him, He loves us with unconditional and unfailing love. John wrote:

On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, Rivers of living water will flow from his heart’ (When he said ‘living water,’ he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory)” (John 7:37-39).

Love God, and love people. It’s the most important part of the way humanity is built. We are made with love, to love. When we look in the mirror, we should see ourselves through the filter of unfailing love, and others through the bright side of good which exists in all of us. We will fail at love, but God never will.
