4 Practical Prayers for Deliverance

4 Practical Prayers for Deliverance

In the Lord’s prayer, one of the most important lines is, “deliver us from evil.” One of the roles that God regularly took on in the Bible was as the Deliverer. He delivered Isaac with a ram, the Israelites from bondage in Egypt, and David from the predations of King Saul. The Lord is always there, prepared to deliver the poor, the weak, and the sinner. Some of the most powerful prayers and Psalms are prayers for deliverance, or thanking God for it.

Deliverance is bringing someone from a place of destruction, negativity, or sin and taking them out of it and into a place of safety, strength, and spiritual healing. The Bible promises that if someone cries out for deliverance, God responds and restores. Praying for deliverance from difficulty and evil is part of fighting spiritual battles and living a victorious life.

What Does the Bible Say about Deliverance?

People often find themselves in difficult and dangerous positions. Sometimes these positions are physical and sometimes they are spiritual. That person needs to be delivered.

The dictionary defines deliverance as, “the act of delivering someone or something: the state of being delivered; liberation; rescue.” Deliverance in the Bible comes in several forms. Sometimes the Lord delivers people from His wrath. These individuals would include Noah, delivered from the Great Flood, and Lot, delivered from the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah. Once the twelve tribes, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, established themselves as a people, God often delivered them from political and military situations. He delivered individuals from dangerous situations.

In the New Testament, Jesus came to earth to deliver people from their sins by dying on the cross. Shedding His blood as an act of substitutionary atonement extended grace to those who are willing to repent of their sins. This ultimate act of deliverance will redeem and deliver people from an eternity in hell, and from the second death. At the end of days, “Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14, emphasis added). Those who aligned themselves with Christ will be eternally redeemed.

Prayer for Deliverance from Darkness

Holy Father,

Thank you for always being with me, and for being the ultimate source of light. Your Word says that in Heaven there will be no need for the sun because of Your glory. Lord, right now I am in a dark place. Spiritually, I feel lost. My sins weigh heavy on my heart, and though I know I am forgiven, I am struggling with my flesh. I cannot see where I am supposed to go, what direction I should turn. It seems like everything is dark, and there is no hope for me or for those around me. Lord, the Bible tells me that if the righteous cry out, You hear us, and you deliver us. Please deliver me from this dark valley through which I walk. I am stumbling in this period of uncertainty and struggle. Keep my feet on solid ground, and help me resist the temptation of the flesh. Help me feel the Spirit’s guidance and hear its whispers so that I may go from this darkness and toward Your light.

In the Name of Jesus, I pray,

Amen.

Prayer for Deliverance and Restoration

Holy Father,

Thank you for being the one who restores the hurt, the broken, and the isolated. Your Word promises that one day, all things will be restored to wholeness, without sin in the New Heaven and the New Earth. Thank you for restoring the relationship between people and yourself through the blood of Jesus Christ! Lord, I am in a place where I am separated from where I want to be, from the people I want to be close to, and from You, the source of hope and life. Lord, please deliver me from this dark place, and this place of separation, and restore me to a right relationship with You and with those around me. Restore and refresh my soul, O Lord! Fill me with the Holy Spirit.

In the Name of Jesus, I pray,

Amen.

Prayer for Deliverance from Evil

Holy Father,

Thank you for being the one who guards the sheep on Your pasture, laying down Your body in the gate to prevent thieves and robbers from entering and destroying Your flock. Your Word says that You will strengthen those who love You and protect them from the predations of the evil one. Lord, deliver me from evil. Keep me from walking into places where I will be tempted to stray from You and Your ways. Help me to follow Your Word, and to guard my heart from wickedness. Send Your Spirit to help me discern when someone comes to me with ill-intent. Only You can deliver Your prodigal children from their evil instincts, from the evil in this fallen world, and from the evil of Satan. Lord, keep me safe from evil.

In the Name of Jesus, I pray,

Amen.

Prayer for Deliverance from Sickness

Holy Father,

Thank you for being the Great Physician, who knows the existence of all disease, and has the ability to heal. Your Word says You give sight to the blind, lift up those who love You and love righteousness. Lord, I am currently unwell. This temporary, earthly body of mine is under attack from disease, a byproduct of living in the fallen world. If it is Your will, please help it to heal. Strengthen my immune system and my body, so that I can recover to Your glory. Of course, as the Apostle Paul wrote, to live is Christ and to die is to be with You. Lord, Please heal me.

In the Name of Jess, I pray,

Amen.

Encouraging Scriptures for When You Need Deliverance

The Bible is full of Scripture about deliverance, about those who needed it, and how God provided it. In these verses we find encouragement, hope, and important reminders that God will always deliver those He loves, and has delivered those who have a relationship with Him from the second death.

Exodus 14:13 “And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.’”

2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

2 Samuel 22:2 “He said, ‘The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer’”

Psalm 34:17 “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.”

Psalm 40:13 “Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me! O Lord, make haste to help me!”

Psalm 91:3 “For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.”

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John 10:9-11 “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Romans 10:13 “For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”

2 Thessalonians 3:3 “But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.”

2 Peter 2:9 “Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment.”

Going to God in prayer is an important way of staying connected to Him. Even in the good times, relying on the Lord is important. Often, He is the only one who can deliver people from hard times, and He is the only one who can redeem sinners.

“But you shall fear the Lord your God, and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies” (2 Kings 17:39).
