Psalms 80:11 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 80:11

She sent out her boughs unto the sea
The Mediterranean, or midland sea, which was the border of the land of Canaan to the west:

and her branches unto the river;
the river Euphrates, which was its border to the east; see ( Deuteronomy 11:24 ) . This, in the spiritual sense of it, will have its accomplishment in the church of Christ, when he shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth, ( Psalms 72:8 ) . The Targum is,

``she sent out her disciples to the great sea, and to the river Euphrates her babes;''

or sucklings.

Psalms 80:11 In-Context

9 You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered by its shade, and the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 It sent out its branches to the Sea, and its shoots toward the River.
12 Why have You broken down its walls, so that all who pass by pick its fruit?
13 The boar from the forest ravages it, and the creatures of the field feed upon it.
