Luke 6:24

24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already had all the comfort you will get!

Luke 6:24 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 6:24

But woe unto you that are rich
Not in worldly riches and substance, for some of these have been, and are happy persons in a spiritual sense; and at most, it can only mean such, who trust in their riches, and place their, happiness in them; but it chiefly regards such, as are rich in their own opinion, and stand in need of nothing; who place their confidence in their own righteousness, and do not apply to Christ, in whom alone are durable riches and righteousness:

for ye have received your consolation;
which they take from their own works, and a very unstable and short lived one it is; for while they are crying Peace, Peace, to themselves, from their own services, sudden destruction comes upon them, and all their comforts vanish away: for there is no true solid comfort but in Christ, and in his righteousness; that administers consolation now, and lays a foundation for everlasting comfort hereafter.

Luke 6:24 In-Context

22 "How blessed you are whenever people hate you and ostracize you and insult you and denounce you as a criminal on account of the Son of Man.
23 Be glad when that happens; yes, dance for joy! because in heaven your reward is great. For that is just how their fathers treated the prophets.
24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already had all the comfort you will get!
25 "Woe to you who are full now, for you will go hungry! "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and cry!
26 "Woe to you when people speak well of you, for that is just how their fathers treated the false prophets!
