Mark 15:12 Meaning and Commentary

Mark 15:12

And Pilate answered and said again unto them
Being astonished that they should ask the release of such an infamous person; and being very desirous of saving Jesus:

what will ye then that I shall do unto him, whom ye call the king of
the Jews?
at least many of you; would you have me put him to death? surely this can never be desired; or would you have me inflict some slight punishment on him, as scourging him, and so dismiss him? (See Gill on Matthew 27:22).

Mark 15:12 In-Context

10 For it was evident to him that it was out of jealousy that the head cohanim had handed him over.
11 But the head cohanim stirred up the crowd to have him release Bar-Abba for them instead.
12 Pilate again said to them, "Then what should I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?"
13 They shouted back, "Put him to death on the stake!"
14 He asked, "Why? What crime has he committed?" But they only shouted louder, "Put him to death on the stake!"
