Psalms 40:15

15 May those who jeer at me, "Aha! Aha!" be aghast because of their shame.

Psalms 40:15 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 40:15

Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame
Of their shameful wishes, words, and actions, as they were: their habitations in Jerusalem were desolate, and so was their house or temple there, and their whole land, and they themselves were stripped of everything, when Jerusalem was taken and destroyed; see ( Matthew 23:38 ) ( Acts 1:20 ) ;

that say unto me, Aha, aha;
words expressive of joy, ( Psalms 35:21 Psalms 35:25 ) , exulting at his miseries and sufferings on the cross, ( Matthew 27:39-44 ) ; so the Targum,

``we have rejoiced at his destruction, with joy at his affliction.''

Psalms 40:15 In-Context

13 Be pleased, ADONAI, to rescue me! ADONAI, hurry and help me!
14 May those who seek to sweep me away be disgraced and humiliated together. May those who take pleasure in doing me harm be turned back and put to confusion.
15 May those who jeer at me, "Aha! Aha!" be aghast because of their shame.
16 But may all those who seek you be glad and take joy in you. May those who love your salvation say always, "ADONAI is great and glorious!"
17 But I am poor and needy; may Adonai think of me. You are my helper and rescuer; my God, don't delay!
