5 Then in front of the throne John saw seven lamps, which are the seven spirits of God. These seven spirits can be angels, or they can represent the “seven-part” Holy Spirit (see Revelation 1:4 and comment).

The lightning and thunder coming from the throne signify the frightening power of God (Exodus 19:16-19).

6 The four living creatures are special angels who guard the throne. With eyes on all sides of them, they are able to see everything.

The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel also had a vision in which he saw something like a sea of glass (Ezekiel 1:22).

7-8 The different appearances of these four living creatures indicate four kinds of abilities that are useful to God. The lion indicates strength; the ox indicates diligence; the man indicates wisdom; and the eagle indicates speed. The main work of these four creatures is to praise God continuously (Ezekiel 1:4-10).

God is worthy to receive praise and worship. He is the Lord God Almighty, Creator of all things, who was, and is, and is to come (see Revelation 1:4). God said to Moses, “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:14). That is, God always exists. He has existed from before the beginning, and He will exist forever (verse 9).

9-11 If the most exalted angels in heaven praise and worship God in this way, certainly we lowly humans should worship and praise Him too.
