CHAPTER 9

The People of Jerusalem (9:1–34)

(Nehemiah 11:3–19)

1–34 The writer is concerned to show that all Israel (verse 1)—exiles from both the northern and southern kingdoms—returned to Jerusalem and Judah. Thus in verse 3, he states that the returnees were from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim and Manasseh. Those of Judah were descended from Judah’s three sons: Perez, Shelah and Zerah (verses 4–6).

Verses 10–13 list the priests who returned from exile, and verses 14–34 list the Levites and their various duties in regard to the temple services.
