Materials for the Tabernacle (35:4–29)

(Exodus 25:1–7; 39:32–43)

4–9 See Exodus 25:1–7 and comment.

10–19 After Moses had outlined all the materials needed for the tabernacle and its furnishings (verses 4–9), he then listed the specific items that had to be made (verses 10–19). Later, when everything had been completed, Moses inspected the tabernacle and all the items in it (Exodus 39:32–43).

Two points should be emphasized here. First, all skilled Israelites—men and women—were to contribute their skills to the building of the tabernacle (verse 10). Everyone had a part to play. God gives different gifts to different people, and each person should use whatever gift he has received to serve others (1 Peter 4:10).

Second, the people carried out Moses’ instructions exactly—just as the LORD had commanded—and because the people obeyed, Moses blessed them (Exodus 39:42–43).

20–29 Moses had announced to the people what materials would be needed (verses 4–9). Now in this section we see the people coming forward with the materials. And what is emphasized here above all is the people’s willingness. The word willing is repeated four times in these verses. Indeed, so willing were the people that they brought more materials than were needed, and had to be told to stop! (see Exodus 36:6–7). Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had that “problem” in our churches today!

We who have received so much from God’s hand need to follow the example of these Israelites and be eager to offer it back to Him. For God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). He looks much more on the heart of the giver than He does on the value of the gift (Mark 12:41–44).
