CHAPTER 35

A Prophecy Against Edom (35:1–15)

1–9 This is Ezekiel’s second prophecy against Edom (see Ezekiel 25:12–14 and comment); here Edom is called Mount Seir (verse 1). Edom’s ancient hostility toward Israel began with the rivalry of two twin brothers, JACOB (Israel) and Esau (Edom); the account of that rivalry is found in Genesis 25:19–34; 27:1–46. God was particularly displeased with the nation of Edom because its people mistreated the Israelites during the fall of Jerusalem (Obadiah9–14).

10–15 In addition, the Edomites coveted the land of the two nations (Israel and Judah, the northern and southern kingdoms), and desired to take possession of them after the fall of Jerusalem—even though God was there (verse 10); the land, after all, belonged to Him! Furthermore, the Edomites boasted against God and spoke against Him without restraint (verse 13). Therefore, God said He would make Edom desolate forever, with no hope of restoration (verses 9,15).
