CHAPTER 6

A Prophecy Against the Mountains of Israel (6:1–14)

1–7 In this chapter, Ezekiel delivers another prophecy, this one directed against the mountains of Israel (verse 2); it was on the mountaintops and hilltops that the Israelites worshiped the idols of the Canaanites, the original inhabitants of the land. These pagan worship sites were called high places (verse 3). Through Ezekiel, the Lord proclaims to the exiles that all these “high places” will be destroyed and all who worship there will be slain (see Leviticus 26:30). “Then,” says the Lord, “you will know that I am the LORD13 (verse 7).

8–10 But the Lord will spare some (verse 8); He will spare a remnant (Isaiah 10:20— 23). And that “remnant” would remember the Lord and repent and turn back to Him (verse 9). As always, the purpose of God’s DISCIPLINE and judgment is to lead people to repent; only those who refuse to repent bring final judgment down upon themselves.

11–14 Here the Lord further describes the coming judgment against Israel, against both the land and its people. The land will be laid waste from the desert to Diblah— that is, from one end to the other (verse 14).
