The LORD . . . is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation (verse 2). The Israelites sang this when they were delivered from Egypt (Exodus 15:2); they sang it when they returned to their land from exile (Psalm 118:14); and they will sing it again when their Messiah Jesus returns to reign in glory.

4–6 In this second song of praise, God’s people not only give God thanks for what He has done but they also make His works known among the nations (verse 4). It is not enough to simply sing God’s praises among our selves; we must proclaim them to the nations (see Psalm 9:1–2; Matthew 28:19–20; Acts 1:8). He has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world (verse 5).

Finally, the people of Zion, God’s Messianic people, will sing for joy—“for great is the Holy one of Israel among you” (verse 6). The great God of all the universe dwells among His people; He is both far and near, both a Creator and a Father. He is Immanuel—God with us (Isaiah 7:14). He is our Savior. He is all of this to us—both Jew and Gentile—through Jesus Christ, the Messiah.
