7–12 Jeremiah waited ten days for the Lord’s answer. Notice how careful Jeremiah was to make sure he had received the Lord’s word, rather than simply giving the people his own opinions. Scripture always differentiates between God’s thoughts and man’s thoughts. In this case, God’s word to the people was this: if they stayed in Judah, God would bless them (verse 10); even Nebuchadnezzar would have compassion on them (verse 12).

13–18 Then the Lord, through Jeremiah, gave the people this warning: if they disobeyed Him and went to Egypt, they would face the very disaster they were trying to escape (verse 17). They would find no safety in Egypt. Trusting in Egypt was the opposite of trusting in God: it was a sign of unbelief. And God would punish them for their unbelief, just as He had punished the people of Jerusalem for their unbelief (verse 18).

19–22 Jeremiah had perceived the intentions of the people; he told them they had made a fatal mistake in asking the Lord for guidance without intending to follow it (verse 20). Then he gave the people a final warning:if they persisted in going to Egypt, they would surely die.
