It’s possible that Baruch desired a more prominent role than that of being Jeremiah’s secretary.119 One of the most difficult roles in Christian ministry is to continually serve under someone else; it usually takes more humility and maturity to be number two than it does to be number one. So here the Lord is telling Baruch to put away all ambition and self–seeking, and carry on with contentment the work he has been given. And may each of Christ’s servants do likewise.

God’s special word of encouragement to Baruch is this: in the midst of disaster, even as Jerusalem is falling, Baruch will escape with his life. The Lord may not make Baruch “great,” but He promises to make him safe.
