Further Steps to Defend Jerusalem (7:1–3)
1–3 In these verses, Nehemiah describes the setting in place of the city gates and the appointment of his brother Hanani to be in charge of Jerusalem. He also assigned the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites to their respective duties. In addition, he appointed certain residents of Jerusalem to serve as guards (verse 3).
