Obadiah - Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Nthing is known of Obadiah apart from his authorship of this short book. This PROPHECY was a response to Edom’s hostility to Judah at a time when Judah was being overrun by foreign enemies. The episode of which Obadiah writes was most likely the invasion of Judah by the Babylonians, culminating in the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. Because of Edom’s complicity in Judah’s defeat, Obadiah prophesied that Edom would one day be destroyed and Judah would be restored. Thus this prophecy was to Edom a message of JUDGMENT and to Judah a message of hope.
