3:3 “Length” is literally “in the former measure.” There were two different standards for the length of the cubit, based upon an Egyptian system of six palms per cubit and a longer one at seven palms. A short cubit was 17.4 inches and a long cubit was 20.4 inches. It’s not completely clear what is meant by the phrase former measure, but the Jerusalem temple used the long cubit.
