2:9 Why would the prophet pray, “Do not forgive them”? First, Isaiah may have been aligning himself with God’s holy hatred of sin; divine justice would require that sinners not be excused without suffering the consequences of their disobedience. Second, the verb “forgive” (nasa’) is often translated “lift up.” The prophet might simply have been asking God to humble these proud people.
