31:8-9 The event that caused the withdrawal of the Assyrian king and his army was not military action by Judah or Egypt, but the intervention of the angel of the Lord who slew 185,000 fighters in one night (37:36). It was fear that motivated the Assyrians’ “rock” (their king) to flee back to Nineveh with his forces.
