36:7 The “royal spokesman,” Sennacherib’s representative, claimed that Hezekiah had removed the high places (rural sanctuaries) and destroyed the altars of the Lord. Being ignorant of the religious history of Canaan, he was unaware that the altars of the high places were pagan altars, not places where the Lord was worshiped. Hezekiah had removed the high places (2Kg 18:4) but had not destroyed altars of the Lord.
