14:16 The people were to be punished because they listened to the false prophets. It was their responsibility to test the prophets (Dt 18:21-22), not just to accept whatever they said without question, but they failed to do so. They may have known that what the prophets said was not in line with God’s will, but because they liked what they heard, they condoned it (Jr 5:31; 23:16; 29:8; 2Co 11:4; 2Tm 4:3). We are also obligated to test the messages we hear and reject those who preach a false message in God’s name (Ac 17:11; Gl 1:6-9; 1Jn 4:1). See notes on Lm 1:5; 2:14.
