4:1-13 How do we know what happened in the wilderness? Jesus probably recounted the temptation narrative to his disciples. There are no real parallels to this story in Jewish or Greco-Roman literature, and no cogent reason has been given as to why the early church would invent it. Furthermore, the story resonates with other known features of Jesus’s self-perception and spiritual practice. These considerations lead even some critical scholars to see at least a core of historicity in the account.
