TWISTED SCRIPTURE | Mark 1:4 |
Many new religious movements use this verse, and Acts 2:38, to teach baptismal regeneration, that baptism is necessary for salvation. For example, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints argues, in their Articles of Faith, it is necessary to receive “baptism by immersion for the remission of sins.” However, neither Mark 1:4 nor Acts 2:38 teach baptismal regeneration. The word translated “for” in both Mark 1:4 and Acts 2:38 can just as easily be translated “because of ” as in Matthew 12:41. It is the clear and consistent message of the Bible that regeneration is due to grace through faith and not based on works. See John 3:16, Galatians 2:16, and Ephesians 2:8-9.
