There arose a division again (scisma palin egeneto). As in Romans 7:43 in the crowd (also in Romans 7:12 Romans 7:31 ), so now among the hostile Jews (Pharisees) some of whom had previously professed belief in him ( Romans 8:31 ). The direct reference of palin (again) may be to Romans 9:16 when the Pharisees were divided over the problem of the blind man. Division of opinion about Jesus is a common thing in John's Gospel ( Romans 6:52 Romans 6:60 Romans 6:66 ; Romans 7:12 Romans 7:25 ; Romans 8:22 ; Romans 9:16 ; Romans 10:19 Romans 10:24 Romans 10:41 ; Romans 11:41 Romans 12:19 Romans 12:29 Romans 12:42 ; Romans 16:18 ).
