LEVI

1.Son of Jacob and Leah (Gn 29:34). Ancestor of priestly tribe (Ex 32:25-29; Nm 3:11-13; Dt 10:6-9); received no allotment of land, only scattered towns and cities of refuge (Nm 18:20; 35:1-8; Jos 13:14,33); supported by tithes (Nm 18:21; Heb 7:5). Assisted descendants of Aaron in worship (Nm 3:5-9; 1Ch 6:16,31-32,49; 23:24-32; 2Ch 29:12-21); taught the word of God (2Ch 17:7-9; Neh 8:9-12).

2.Apostle, called Matthew (Mk 2:14; Lk 5:27-29; cp. Mt 9:9).
